Title:Magnificent Mythology

Lesson: 1

Grade Level: 6

Subject:  Language Arts

Learner Outcomes:  Students will be introduced to Greek mythology,
its characteristics, and some stories that exemplify these characteristics.
Students will create a list of modern mythological references.

Duration of Lesson: 3-4 (45 minute) class periods

Materials:  Selection of mythology books, tapes, and videos

Technology Tools/Courseware:
    Computer with Internet connection
    Microsoft Power point (97 or later version)
    Data projector

Teacher Notes:  If a data projector is not available, students can read the
Power Point lesson individually, and classroom discussion can follow.

Procedures:
    1.  Introduce Greek mythology with a Power Point lesson.
    2.  Read myths linked to Power Point lesson aloud and discuss how
         each myth exemplifies the stated characteristic.
    3.  Discuss the relevancy of mythology in product names and logos,
         vocabulary, and literary references.
    4.  Students will create a list of modern mythological references from
         the Internet, books, newspapers, magazines, and everyday life.

Modifications:  Teachers should determine the need for student assistance
based on modifications on the IEP and the request of the special educator.
Special Education students may be provided with easy versions of the Greek
myths.  Favorite Greek Myths (Dover Children's Thrift Classic) by Blaisdell
and Green is available from Amazon.com.  Students may work in pairs to
complete the Family Tree and the list of mythological references.

Enrichment Activities:
    1.  Students may locate, read, and summarize other myths that exemplify
         the characteristics.
    2.  Students may create a word search containing the names of the
         Greek gods and goddesses.
