Title: Families of Mount Olympus

Lesson: 2

Grade Level: 6

Subject: Language Arts

Learner Outcomes:  Students will search the Internet to find the names and
responsibilities of the major Greek gods and goddesses and record these in a
chart. They will complete a family tree showing the relationships between these
gods and goddesses.  Students will also read, illustrate, and summarize myths
and keep a reading log.  In the summary, students will list the characteristics
that identify the story as a myth.

Duration of Lesson: 7-8 (45 minute) class periods

Materials:
     Responsibilities of the Gods worksheet & answer key
     Family Tree worksheet & answer key
  Reading Log
  Characters of Greek Mythology list of gods and goddesses
    Selection of mythology books

Technology Tools/ Courseware:
  Computer with Internet connections
  Microsoft Office (97 or later version)

Teacher Notes:  All sources may not list the gods and goddesses as shown
on the answer keys.  Allow some flexibility in accepting answers.

Procedures:
  1.  Students will use the web sites listed and/or books to complete the
       Responsibilities of the Gods and Family Tree worksheets.
  2.  Students will read 5 myths that tell stories about the gods and
       goddesses on the provided list.
  3.  Students will keep a log of the myths they read.
  4.  Students will summarize and illustrate 3 of these myths.  In the summary,
       students will list the characteristics that identify the story as a myth.

Modifications: Teachers should determine the need for student assistance
based on modifications on the IEP and the request of the special educator.
Students may work in pairs to complete the Responsibilities of the Gods and
the Family Tree worksheets.

Enrichment Activities:
  1.  Students may create a diorama of one the myths they read.
  2.  Students may create a crossword puzzle using the gods and their
        responsibilities.

Evaluation / Assessment:
Scoring Rubric:  Students will be evaluated on the accuracy of their worksheets
(sources may have minor differences).  They will also be evaluated on
completion of the required reading, the reading log, and the summaries.
