Title: Fascinating Creatures

Lesson:  3

Grade:  6

Subjects:  Language Arts, Science, and Art

Learner Outcomes:  Students will use electronic dictionaries and encyclopedias to identify and write definitions for a list of 12 mythological characters.  Students will classify mythological characters into categories such as birds, animals, and humans.

Duration of Lesson:  1-2 (45 minute) class periods

Materials:
    Dictionaries
    Encyclopedias
    Books on Mythological Creatures
    List of Mythological Creatures

Technology Tools/Course Ware:
    Student Computers/Lab
    Encarta
    Mircosoft Office
    Electronic Dictionaries
    Electronic Encyclopedias
    Tape Recorder

Teacher Notes:  We are using books that should be readily available.  List of mythological creatures may include Centaur, Cerberus, Chimera, Cyclops, Griffin, Harpies, Hydra, Medusa, Minotaur, Pegasus, Sphinx. and Unicorn.

Procedures:
     1.  Students will be given a list of 12 mythological creatures to identify.
     2.  Students will use books or internet resources to find and write definitions
          for each mythological creature.
     3.  Students will work in small groups to brainstorm and choose categories to
          use to classify the mythological creature
     4.  Each group will report their findings.

Modifications:  Teachers should determine the need for student assistance based on modifications on IEP and request from special educator.  Support staff may be present during the lesson.  Teachers are encouraged to use peer tutoring, cooperative groups, or small group activities.

Enrichment Activities:  Each member of the group will choose one of the mythological creature to illustrate and put together to make a group booklet.
