Thunderstorms

Grade Level:    Fourth

Subjects:    Science, Language Arts and Technology

Learner Outcomes:    The student will understand thunderstorms.

Duration of Lesson:  Two 30-45 minute lessons.

Materials:    Thunder Cake by Patricia Polacco, 1 cup shortening, 1 3/4 cup sugar,          1 tsp. vanilla, 3 eggs, 1 cup cold water and 1/3 cup pureed tomatoes.

Technology Tools/Course work:   Internet, Encarta, 1995

Teacher Notes:    Permission slips to access the Internet must be obtained from each student according to school's acceptable use policy.

Procedures:
1.    Read Thundercake by Patricia Polacco.
2.    Make "My Grandma's Thunder Cake" as per directions in the book Thunder Cake by Patricia Polacco.
3.    Explore thunderstorms.
4.    Use Encarta, 1995, to create reports about thunderstorms.

Modifications:    Have small groups of students prepare and present a brief thunderstorm program using Power Point.  Check students Individualized Educational Plan for additional modifications.

Enrichment Activities:

Evaluation/Assessment:    The students will create a find-a-word puzzle using the Internet.   The students will share thunderstorm reports with the class.
