The Rainbows End

Learner Outcomes: Students will:

  1. Listen to story Rainbow Fish read orally by the teacher and  compose a brief description of the book using Microsoft Word Software.
  2. Students will view movie "Rainbow Fish" and participate in Reader's Theater.
  3. Students will create individual books displaying main characters, sequence of events, and main ideas of the story.


Duration of the Lesson:   30 minutes (Monday - Friday)

Materials:  Book: Rainbow Fish, construction paper, scissors, drawing paper, crayons, markers, Video/DVD: Rainbow Fish, hole punch, and brads fasteners (some type of binding apparatus), computer, and printer.

Technology Tools/Courseware:  VCR/DVD player, computer (with Microsoft Word), video camera (reader's theater), video, and television.   

Teacher Notes:  


Procedure: 
Day 1:  Introduce the book Rainbow Fish. Teacher will read and discuss book with students.
Day 2:  Conduct a brief discussion of book to determine if students recall details of the story.  The students will create individual books containing sequence of events, characters, and main idea of story.  Students will view movie - "Rainbow Fish" (teacher will discuss/introduce students to 
reader's theater).  Begin determining character roles for students and discuss ideas for making props for student's interpretation of  "Rainbow Fish".  Have students decide who they will perform
for (parents, class, etc).
Day 3:  Students will begin making props and re-writing story (using Microsoft Word) to accommodate their roles in the play. Teacher will direct student in rehearsal of play (practice individual parts).  Activities today may require additional time to complete.
Day 4:  Students will continue making props and rehearse parts for play.  Teacher will direct students in dress rehearsal for play.
Discuss/orientate student who will be recording the play with direction for operating the video recorder.    Send home
reminders -
reader's theater!!!!  To remind parents and students of the special event.
Day 5:  Set up props for
reader's theater.  If time permits, have students run through another dress rehearsal (if they so desire).  Check video camera to ensure it is working properly (repeat/review instruction for operating with students).
               

Modifications:  Modifications will be made according to student's Individualized Educational Plan.

Enrichment Activities:  Students will participate in computer generated activity sheets, games, puzzles, and character education activities.  Provide book list of other books in Rainbow Fish Series. Evaluation/Assessment:  Reader's Theater Rubric West Virginia Instructional Goals and Objectives:
