Upon completion
of this lesson, students will be able to:
- conduct Internet research
on Fast Foods, and identify the target of Fast Food Restaurants
- list two concerns
about eating frequently at Fast Food Restaurants
- identify three ways
of eating healthy at Fast Food Restaurants
- design a fact-based
brochure (tri-fold handout) which will explain the brief history of the fast
food restaurant,
the types of foods served and the nutritional information on the Basic Menu.
- deliver oral presentations
on the nutritional information of Fast Food Restaurants
Duration of Lesson: Three 90 minute class periods

Materials:
- Multimedia Computers
with Internet access and Printer
- "Card Stock" paper
(for brochures)
- Computer Software:
Microsoft Office
Technology tools/Courseware:
- Computer with Internet
access
- Microsoft Word
Teacher Notes:
- Reserve
time in the computer lab for 2 day (if necessary)
- Groups
of two are recommended over larger groups because of idle time during searches.
- Students
should be guided through initial Internet searches to ensure quality sites.
- Presentations
could be made to elementary or middle schools or within the classroom.
(Possibly present within the class first, then take best presentations to
the other locations to present again.)
- Fast
foods chains in our area were chosen so that students would be familiar with
them.

- Fast Foods
Procedures:
- Identify
the class's favorite fast food establishments by listing them on the board.
- Discuss
the locations of the fast food restaurants: (corners of streets, off
the side of interstate, at malls, schools,
gas stations, etc. Lead students to realize that they are almost everywhere
you look, symbolizing our fast food nation.
- Discuss
that fast food is mainly targeted to children with their advertising toys.
- Using
overhead, give a general overview of fast foods. Refer to lecture notes.
- Have students to get
a partner and draw a number to be assigned a fast food company.
- Give to students the
"Creating a Brochure" handout. List
on the board the questions that must be answered on their brochure.
Groups must create and design their brochure with the information below and
illustrations that represent "their" fast food chain.
- An oral presentation
will be required and brochures will be displayed after the presentation.
1. The name of your fast food business
2. Logo of business
3. Home office and brief history
4. Internet site address
5. Types of food served
6. Breakfast food?
7. Main meal items?
8. Adult and children's menu?
9. Nutritional information on Basic Menu?
10. Is a low calorie or low fat item offered?
- Students will then
conduct internet research on their assigned restaurant The following
sites can be used for starters,
and more can be located by using a search engine such as Altavista.

Remind students
to document all sites used in the proper format.
- Students will design
and create tri-fold brochures concerning their individual fast food chain
to be used for educating
others about the nutritional facts about fast foods.
Modifications:
- Look
at individual IEPs and 504s.
- Exceptional
students may require more time to complete the research and brochure.
Students can be placed with higher
level students to aid throughout the project.
Enrichment Activities:
- Students will use the
Internet or the library to research the cultures of other countries. They
will compile their research
results into a plan for a fast-food restaurant in each of the countries,
tailoring the restaurant to the cultural tastes of people in
those countries. Fast

will be assessed by the information covered in their brochure and oral presentation
