Title:  No Place to Hide

Learner Outcomes: The student will:

            1. Use political maps, computer technology,  to find the location of areas (countries) associated with the movement of  the Jewish citizens during the early 1930's to approximately 1945.
             2. Be able to identify countries that made up the Allied Powers, Axis Powers, and the Nazi controlled areas.
             3. Prepare a timeline using information/data from approximately 1933 to 1945 that lists events, in chronological  order, that relate to the Nazi/Hitler rise to power and eventual plan to exterminate the Jewish nation.
             4. Prepare a time line that would follow the life of Anna Frank. This would include events of her family's moves,  the time spent in hiding, the capture, and the final months in Nazi camps.
             5.  Prepare a time line that would follow this period in relation to events in other parts of the world


Duration of Lesson: 4-5 class periods of 45 minutes in length

Teacher Notes:

Procedures:
        1.  Students will use web sites to gather information needed to complete maps or timelines. Some examples might include:
           The History Place Timeline
           Dogpile
                       The following directions may be helpful in getting access to this information:
                             (type-- maps of World War II  --(fetch) )
                            (go to -- World War II maps by date)
                            (scroll down the choices --select number for the particular map needed)
       2 .  Students will use blank outline maps of  Europe to locate countries in which the Jewish citizens relocated to get     away from the Nazi persecution.
      3.  Students will use blank outline maps of Europe  to highlight (color) and name the countries that were part of the Axis and Allied nations.  Some suggested sites are:
           National Geographic
           Rand McNally

Modifications:
        1.  Students who find lesson(s) difficult would work with a partner to complete the activity.
        2.  Student would divide the work into areas that would require less reading and use their abilities to complete  map        sections.
        3.  Students may wish to visit a local library and check out "Books on Tape"  to listen to stories about the problems faced by the Jewish people during the time frame of World War II.
 

Enrichment Activities:
        1.  Student could check books from a library to read about topics related to:  theories about the rise of the Nazi    movement.  Hitler's movement into the area of Poland,  label maps to indicate the year (date) Hitler's forces invaded countries of Europe.
        2.  Students may read literary works such as:  The Diary of Anna Frank.
        3..  Student may find literary works that tell of similar struggles of other ethnic or religious groups that faced persecution or discrimination in other areas of the world.
        4.  Students may use their timeline to compare events that happened on the same date in other parts of the world.

Evaluation/Assessment:
Students will:
         1. Students will submit completed  maps with the locations of  the countries of Europe that were controlled by the German forces.
         2.  Students will list members of the Axis and Allied powers.
         3.  Students will submit the completed timeline for evaluation and the  information will be used to answer questions on a written exam.
