Title: Too Late to Hide

Grade Level: 7,8

Subjects:   Mathematics, Social Studies, Language Arts, and Computer/Technology

Lesson Goal:   The students will be able to display data graphically using technology software and utilize the display of data to explain the effects that World War II had on the countries and the Jewish population in Europe.

Learner Outcomes:  The students will:
  1.  be able to display data graphically using Microsoft Excel.
  2.  be able to extrapolate information from the data displayed in their graphs.
  3.  be able to determine measures of central tendencies (mean, median, and mode) which relate to the data being displayed graphically.
  4.  be able to identify the effects that World War II had on the countries involved as related to battle causalities, expenditures of the war, and the Jewish population by visually representing the data in graphs.
  5.  be able to develop a written explanation of the data display in their graphs.

Duration of Lesson: Two 45 minute class periods

Materials:  3.5 diskettes for each student or one for the entire class
              Data Sheet 1 with Axis Casualties and Expenditures
              Data Sheet 2 with Allied Casualties and Expenditures
              Data Sheet 3 with Jewish Populations/Casualties in the Axis Powers
                   Spreadsheet directions printed for each student  "Directions for Creating a Graph"

Technology Tools/Courseware:  Multimedia Computer with Internet access
                                                      Word Processing program
                                                      Spreadsheet program

Teacher Notes:
The students will need the following prerequisite skills:

Procedures:
Activity 1:  Creating a graph using Data Sheet 1, 2, and 3.
    The students will be using the spreadsheet to graphically display data.
    1.    Open Excel and and create a new worksheet, and save it under a unique file name to your floppy disk.
    2.    Enter data into the spreadsheet.
    3.    Select the cells that contain the data you want to appear in the chart (graph).
    4.    Click Insert on the Menu.
    5.    Choose Chart.
    6.    Select a chart type, which is appropriate for your data, under Standard Types.  (Column, Bar, Line, Pie, and X,Y Scatter).
    7.   Click Next on the next two screens.
    8.   Choose Titles tab.     9.   If a legend or key is needed, choose the Legend tab and then the Placement position for your legend.
   10.  Click Next.
   11.  Choose Chart location as a new sheet.
   12   Click Finish.
   13.  Save your file on your floppy disk.
   14.  Ask you teacher for help printing your graph.

Activity 2:  Interpret information from the graphs created in Activity 1
    The students will discuss and be able to identify the effects that World War II had on the countries involved as related to battle causalities, expenditures of the war, and the Jewish population by visually interpreting  the data represented in the graph and data sheets.

Activity 3:  The students will develop a written explanation of the data displayed in their graphs.

Modifications:  Students with special needs may work with partners to complete the assignment.
                          Teacher will provide modified data sheets with fewer data items to be entered into the spreadsheet.
                          Students will be assisted by teacher or a high achieving student.
                          Student will be read the directions on how to graphically display the data.

Enrichment Activities:  The students will:
    1.  Design their own data collection project that reflects the activities and lessons on prejudice and the Jewish persecution.
    2.  Collect the data for your survey and display the results using Microsoft Excel.
    3.  Review their project with other classmates.
    4.  If necessary, make changes to improve their project based on the review from other classmates.
    5.  Present their data collection project to the their classmates.
    Suggestion:  The student may decide to collect real data about their classmates'  feelings on prejudice and persecution or choose to do additional research on number facts from the World War II time period.
