Title:  Hide and Seek

Grade Levels:  7,8

Learner Outcomes:
    1.  The student will be able to access the Internet to find information about a particular topic.
    2.  The student will gain knowledge about the historical time period associated with the writing of The Diary of Anne Frank.
    3.  The student will process information about the time that Anne Frank was in hiding.
Optional Technology Outcome:
    1.  The student will be able to minimize documents and use both a web browser and a word processing program simultaneously.

Duration of Lesson:  4 class periods of approximately 45 minutes (This may vary depending on the speed of the Internet access that is being used.)

Materials:  paper and pencil
                   3.5" diskette (optional)

Technology Tools/Courseware:
           Computer with Internet access
              Word Processing program (optional)

Teacher Notes:

Procedures:
    1.  As an introduction to the lesson, have students imagine what it would be like to be in hiding for a year or two.  Have students identify that problems that they feel would occur.
    2.  Have the students brainstorm in small groups to determine what things would be important to have with them.  Have students share these with their classmates.
    3.  Instruct students about the rules for using the Internet.  Remind them that they are to use only the sites that have been provided by the teacher or that are included in this lesson plan.
    4.  Set the purpose for completing this activity.  Inform students that they will be viewing sites that provide information about the period of time when Anne Frank and her family were in hiding.  They also need to know that Anne wrote a diary during this time and much of the information that they will find came directly from her diary.
    5.  Provide students with a list of websites and questions that they will need to answer using the information from the sites.   A worksheet created on Microsoft Word is available for your use:    Anne's Journey

    6.  Advise students that they will need to produce a written report of the answers for the questions and share the information with their classmates at the end of the lesson.

Optional procedure:
    1.  Students may record their answers for the questions in a word processing document by minimizing the Internet browser and opening the word processing document to record information.  To retrieve additional information they will need to minimize the word processing document and open the browser.

    1.  Students will be assessed on the number of correct answers for the questions included in the Internet search.
    2.  If this activity is completed by partners, the cooperative skills will also be assessed.
