Title: The Time to Hide

Description:  In this lesson, the students will complete research and select an important event that significantly impacted the history of this particular time period or an individual who played a significant role in the period of history associated with The Diary of Anne Frank. Student will access web sites provided by the teacher and use multimedia resources such as Encarta, and traditional library reference sources to find information to be used in the development of a Microsoft PowerPoint presentation that will be shared with classmates.

Learner Outcomes:
    1.  The student will access information using Internet web sites, multimedia software, and traditional reference sources.
    2.  The student will develop a slide show using a presentation software application such as Microsoft PowerPoint.
    3.  The student will gain knowledge of the events of the time period in which The Diary of Anne Frank was written.
    4.  The student will realize the impact of particular individuals on the events of the historical period related to the writing of the diary.

Duration of Lesson:  8-10 class periods of approximately 45 minutes

Materials:  Library reference materials:     Biographies
                                                                  Encyclopedias
                                                                  Nonfiction works concerning World War II
                    Paper, pencil or pen
                    A list of people who played a role in the events associated with the diary of Anne Frank
                    A list of events that were related to the diary of Anne Frank

Technology Tools/Courseware:  Computer with Internet access
                                                      Presentation application: Microsoft PowerPoint (other applications may be used as well)
                                                      Multimedia research software such as Encarta (optional)
                                                      Electric Library - an online research tool (optional)
Teacher Notes:

Procedures:
    1.  Have the students share any information they know about World War II and the events that led to its occurrence.
    2.  Inform the students that they will be working on a project to help them learn more about these events, the people who were involved, and the role of Anne Frank during this period of history.
    3.  Have each student select an event or individual for his/her presentation from the provided list (see below).
    4.  Advise students of the research procedures that are acceptable and the copyright laws that must be considered.  Each student will need to document the sources that are used for the project.
    5.  Remind students to take notes as they read the research materials.
    6.  Demonstrate the development of a simple PowerPoint presentation.  (A tutorial is available:  Microsoft PowerPoint for Educators). The students should take notes during this demonstration.  Be sure to include directions for copying pictures from web sites for use in presentations.  Once again remind students of copyright laws and the necessity of documenting their resources.
    7.  Each presentation concerning an individual should include 7-10 slides:

    9.  The students will develop slide show presentations.
  10.  The presentations will be shown in class.  This will allow members of the class the opportunity to view other projects and ask questions.

Modifications:
    Students with special needs may work with partners to complete the assignment.
    The number of required slides may be reduced depending on the ability of the students.
    Additional assistance may be provided by the teacher in assisting research.
    The reading ability of individual students may be taken into consideration when selecting biographical information for research.

Enrichment Activities:
    Students may be taught to use the more advanced applications available in PowerPoint such as adding voice or music to the presentations.
    Students may interview individuals who were involved in World War II.

Evaluation/Assessment:
    1.  Students completed and presented the required number of slides.
    2.  Students documented resources.
    3.  Students used the presentation tool to effectively communicate ideas.
    4.  Correct grammar and spelling was used in the slides.
    5.  Information presented was clear and easily understood.
    6.  Creativity is evident in the presentation.
