Title:  Going into Hiding

Unit Description:     This unit is developed around the experience portrayed in the diary that was written by Anne Frank during the period she and her family were in hiding as a result of the Nazi persecution of the Jews. The purpose of this unit is to involve students in the discovery of the importance of this period of history and the impact it had on individuals and particular groups of people. The students will examine persecution and its results.  Through the activities in the lessons, they will more fully understand the setting in which Anne and her family were hiding and the reasons they found it necessary to go into hiding. The students will use the Internet, multimedia software and traditional library references as research tools and computer technology to generate graphs and presentations.

Technology Tools: Computers with Internet access, a software program that includes an atlas, a computer based graphing program such as Microsoft Excel, a word processing program such as Microsoft Word, and a presentation program such as Microsoft PowerPoint.

Learner Outcomes:
   1.  The students will be able to use Internet web sites, multimedia resources, and traditional library resources to access information.
    2.  The students will develop graphs that present information related to their research.
    3.  The students will prepare slide presentations and present these to their classmates using a presentation device.
    4.  The students will realize the impact of persecution on particular groups of people.
    5.  The students will prepare written reports using word processing.
    6.  The students will acquire knowledge and understanding of the people and events of the historical period in which The Diary of Anne Frank was written.



Duration of Unit: 30-35 class periods (approximately 45 minutes in length)
