Food Scooting Boogie

Learner Outcomes:
1. The student will choose between healthy and unhealthy
foods.
2. The student will place healthy foods into a
food pyramid.
3. The student will maneuver a scooter throughout
the gym to gather up healthy foods.
4. The students will work cooperatively to construct
a jump rope pyramid while on scooters.
Duration of Lesson: One class period of approximately
60 minutes. (To be taught after instruction of the Food
Pyramid)
Materials: Scooters, jump ropes, plastic
foods or pictures of foods (healthy and unhealthy)
Technology Tools/Courseware: CD recording
of Fruit and Vegetable song (optional), Computer for Power
Point presentation and projector,and computer for web site Physical
Fitness Challenge for Kids
Teacher Notes:
Procedures:

Begin class by reviewing healthy foods and their placement
in the Food
Pyramid. Catergorizing plastic foods or pictures of foods would
be one way to do this.

Show Power Point presentation.

Divide class into two groups. One group will be with
the parent volunteer doing the Fitness
Challenge on the web site. The other group will be with the teacher
using scooter boards to group plastic or picture foods into healthy and
unhealthy piles.(Teacher scatters out foods before game.) Explain
rules
of game to class.

After 15 minutes each group will change activities.

Next the whole group will use the jump ropes to construct
a food pyramid outline on the floor.

Then the teacher scatters the foods around the gym again
and the students scoot around the gym gathering up the foods and placing
them in the correct portion of the pyramid while the Fruit
and Vegetable song plays.

End the class with the students helping put materials away.
Modifications: Buddies to help less physically
able students. Use of wagon instead of scooter.
Enrichment Activities: Play the scooter game under
a time limit. Replay and try to beat the time set. Construct
a pyramid with the scooter boards while on them.
Evaluation/Assessment: Teacher observation
of foods placed correctly in the Food
Pyramid. Teacher observation of construction of Food Pyramid,
and teacher observation of foods placed in healthy and unhealthy groups.
Also the teacher will observe student partipation in activities.
