  • Need Healthy Snacks.
  • This lesson and the links are best viewed in Internet Explorer.
  • Computer lab needs to have links to nutrition and fitness sites put on favorites to use Back-to-School Night.
Procedures:

1.  We want as many of the community members as possible to be involved in, as well as be aware of, the problems connected with poor eating habits, and lack of fitness.
Therefore, we want to put posters around the community to try to bring them to the presentation and to involve them in the "Challenge": sample poster
These will be placed two weeks prior to the presentation. An article will be sent to the paper by the school technology staff member telling about the challenge.

2.  One week prior to the presentation, a letter will be sent home with the parents, explaining what the school is trying to do, and again giving the facts. sample letter.

3.  On Back-to-School night, "students" will assemble in the gymnasium. As they enter, they will each be given a number, 1,2 or 3, sequentially repeated. Presenter will explain the challenge, using the Power Point presentation from lesson1, BMI and nutrition Internet sites; and the Presidential Physical Fitness Internet site.

4.  "Students" will be divided into groups of three, using their pre-assigned numbers.  Groups will be rotated on a half-hour basis.

  • Group 1 - Computer lab - view sites on nutrition and physical fitness - get handout to be able to use these on their home computers.
  • Group 2 - BMI data - school nurse enters "blind"* data - get printout from Bio-Impedance Analyzer on Body Mass Index.
  • Group 3 - "Students" get overview of fitness and playground equipment and are able to try these things out.
*Blind data: a code will be assigned to each person that BMI data is collected on.  That code will be used to graph and chart the data. That way, data can be posted, a pre and post evaluation can be done, and no individual will be "put on the spot".

5. Follow-up and review lessons will be conducted the following day in each classroom, and the school nurse will get BMI data for those who were not present at Back-to-School Night.

6. A pre-test on the Presidential Physical Fitness Challenge will be conducted before September is over.

7. The algebra class will do poster-size graphs of the BMI  and Fitness Challenge data (using the "blind" data )to post at the school - one each for students and adults; The pre-data  poster will be done the week following Back-to-School Night. Those community members who wish to participate in the Fitness Challenge part will do so using the PALA portion of this site.

 8. 10 minutes of each Physical Education Class will be devoted to working on the specifics of the Fitness Challenge. A checklist with the specifics of the test will be sent home weekly to be filled out by each participant.

9.A post-test BMI and Fitness Challenge will be conducted the following May. Follow-up data charts will be posted for analysis and comparison. Information will be sent in a newsletter home, and an article will be sent to the paper by the technology staff member at the school.

10. If the post data shows a statistically significant improvement in both BMI, and Fitness Challenge, there will be a "Healthy Choice" year-end community picnic to celebrate.

11. School nurse will conduct monthly follow-up nutrition lessons with each classroom.

Modifications:

Those people with specific food allergies can consult with the school nurse to find nutrition - comparable substitutions. Those people with physical handicaps can likewise
consult with the school nurse to find acceptable fitness substitutes.

Enrichment Activities:

  • Basketball, Cheerleading, and Track activities will be made available to all 5-8 students.
  • Once a month, students will eat lunch in the "Cardinal Cafe" - a room set up for "special" dining with the emphasis on manners, healthy eating, and "real world" atmosphere.
Evaluation/Assessment:

The evaluation is built in to the activity. The results of the Presidential Physical Fitness  Challenge, and BMI post assessment are self-revealing.
Also, as an assessment for the graphs that the Algebra class does, there will be a rubric to grade.
