Synopsis:

This unit is centered around the story, One Grain of Rice: A Mathematical Folktale, by Demi.  In the story, set in India, a raja promises a village girl a reward for returning some rice that belonged to him.  Since it is a time of famine, the girl requests a single grain of rice on the first day, with the amount to be doubled each day for a total of thirty days.  Although the  raja thinks this too modest a reward, he agrees.  As the story progresses, students see how clever the girl is and how one grain of rice quickly becomes one billion grains of rice.  The tale sets the stage for students to learn more about India and its culture, rice and measurement, and folktales.   In the culminating activity, students  write their own folktales using information learned along the way.
