Teddi Learns Keyboarding

Grade Level(s): K-3

Learner Outcomes:

The students will demonstrate proper techniques at a computer station.
The kindergarten student will learn the following keys: space bars, shift, return/enter, backspace/delete.
The kindergarten student will be able to type the lower case alphabet.
The kindergarten student will be able to type their name using the upper and lower case alphabet.
The first grade students will continue with the Kindergarten outcomes in addition to typing sentences and paragraphs.
The first grade student will learn the following keys: period, comma, question, exclamation.
The second grade students will continue the Kindergarten-First grade outcomes in addition to typing sentences and paragraphs.
The third grade student will continue the Kindergarten-Second grade outcomes in addition to typing and composing paragraphs and stories.

Duration of Lesson: Twelve weeks of 30-minute block

Materials: Laminated copies of the keyboard for practice

Technology Tools:

Computers and Sunburst: Type to Learn

Teacher Notes:

The teacher will install the software package, create a password, set up a classroom, and enter students' names.

Procedures:

The teacher will review the proper techniques for the computer station.
The teacher will demonstrate how to log on, complete a lesson, save, and exit the program, utilizing a projection device or overhead.
The students will log on and begin a self-paced program.
At the end of each lesson, the teacher will generate a performance report on each student.
The students will continue the self-paced program until it is completed.

Modifications:

Time slots will vary according to the computer availability (computer lab versus single classroom computers).
Special needs student's expectations would be derived from the IEP.

Bulletin Board - Construct a bulletin board depicting a keyboard. The keys would be made from styrofoam hamburger containers. The letters/numbers/symbols would be placed on each styrofoam container with a permanent marker. The styrofoam containers would then be placed on the bulletin board, depicting a keyboard.
