Objective(s)

Students will:

  • explore the relationships between the extraction and use of natural resources and the impact on the environment
  • research alternative energy sources
  • understand the fragile nature of the Earth
  • research and explain how the political system influences environmental decisions
  • develop decision making skills with respect to addressing environmental problems

Description:

Students will conduct Internet research to find out what renewable and non renewable resources are.  They will then be assigned a renewable resource to investigate in detail and develop a feasibility study to present to the class in the form of a PowerPoint presentation. This study will identify the resource and why it should be used as the fuel source in the power plant on EdVenture Island.  The class will then choose the type of renewable resource they will use on the island.

Instructional Materials:

Introduction Motivation:

The students will be introduced to EdVenture Island.  This island has recently been discovered and has a wealth of natural resources to offer society.  The students are being contracted as engineers to develop a new power plant for the island.  The plant should do the least amount of harm to the environment and be the most cost effective.

Learning Context:

Students will use internet searches to learn how to build an electrical generator and explore ways to increase its power output.  They will use Excel to collect, organize, and communicate their findings using charts and graphs.   In small groups they will be asked to explore and design an electrical power generator to serve the needs of a small island called EdVenture Island. In the course of this investigation, they will be assigned a  renewable or non renewable resource available for the production of that power. Each group will prepare a report on that resource that will be presented to the remainder of the class in the form of a PowerPoint presentation. After all presentations are made, the class will then decide which type of resource will be used to supply power to the island.

Time Required

Two 45 minute class periods

Pre-Requisite Skills

Students should have a basic knowledge of what electricity (static and non static) is.  They should also understand how a generator works. Computer knowledge of PowerPoint is also necessary, but can be taught during the activity.

21st Century Tools (Technology Tools)

  • Internet searching and PowerPoint

Procedure

  1. Students will follow the Engineering Problem Solving Method to solve the problem of power on the island.
  2. Assign each group a renewable or non renewable resource to examine as a possible energy source for the island's power generator. They are to do Internet research on this resource.  They may use the links on the student page or use an internet search engine to find the information they need for the project.
  3. Each group will prepare and present a PowerPoint presentation and a report to the remainder of the class outlining why their resource would be viable as an energy source on the island. See the spreadsheet above. One day should be spent on each of the following: research of the material, PowerPoint Development, and presentation.

Collaboration

Collaboration: This project requires proper written English, research tools, mathematics, and creativity.
