| Sheep and cattle graze on the rich
farmland thoughout the island, with dairy farming predominate around the
midsection of the island. Deer farming is also popular through out the
country for the export market. There are about 600 sheep and 80 cattle.
Land unsuitable for dairy or sheep is generally used for forestry and Le
‘d Bac has some very nice man made forests of Radiata Pine.
Apples, strawberries, peaches, apricots and oranges are grown for use on the island. In recent years EdVenture's wines have also been exported in ever increasing quantities. The first vine was actually planted in the 1840s, however it is in the last 20 years that our wines 'have come of age'. The long island autumn plays an important part in ripening the grapes slowly. Two families are involved in wine making. The Marlborough family grow the Sauvignon Blanc grape. While the Gisborne family favors the Chardonnay grape. Agricultural products account for over 30% of our export revenues. 15% of the land is under permanent cultivation. |
