| Within the interior of EdVenture Island you will
find aluminum and copper mines in full service. For over 75 years
the rich deposits have been mined for high quality ore that is turned into
a variety of useful products right here on the island. Family owned
and operated for the last 23 years the Ray Aluminum Mine is quite a sight
to behold. Stop by and ask Jim Joe Ray for a tour of the dig.
He’ll be happy to show you around. Not far away (nothing on EdVenture
is far from anything else) is Top Copper Mine and Wire. Proud producers
of electrical metals for the island and beyond.
While not as plentiful as copper and aluminum, gold and silver have
been mined successfully for as long as history has been recorded on the
island. Coupled with gemstones found right on the beaches and you
can see why EdVenture jewelry is a thriving cottage industry.

While our volcanoes have been dormant for quite a while the natural heat inherent in our substrata produce a variety of hot springs. While some have been co-opted for use by commercial spas, there are quite a few just waiting to be found by the adventurous hiker. For those of a more sedate nature be sure to visit Morgan Beach. You need only scoop out the sand and let it fill with naturally heated water to create your very hot tub on the beach. At night you can soak in the 102 degree water and watch the stars overhead. It just doesn’t get any better than that!! |
| Currently, our oil and natural gas fields are under study. The ever rising cost of this fossil fuels coupled with the expense of importing them has led more than one entrepreneur to investigate the potential to exploit our own resources. With both oil and gas lying just offshore it seems quite possible that we may see activity in the drilling arena. Island conservation groups have become involved in the discussion to insure that our natural resources are protected. | ![]() |
