Materials:

  • (1) 1 m uninsulated nichrome wire

  • (3) 15 cm copper wires
  • (1) alligator clip
  • (1) battery holder (2 D cell)
  • (2) D cells
  • (1) 4 watt light bulb
  • (1) socket for bulb
  • (1) pencil
  • (1) 20 cm x 50 cm wooden board
  • (1) roll electrical tape

Procedures:

  1. Wrap the 1 meter uninsulated nichrome wire around the pencil. Try to make sure the wire coils stay separated and do not touch.
  2. Put the D cells in the battery holder and mount it to one end of the wooden board using the electrical tape.
  3. Attach the two 15 cm copper wires to the positive and negative terminals of the battery holder.
  4. Mount the pencil coiled with wire to the board using the electrical tape.
  5. Attach one of the 15 cm copper wires to the alligator clip and keep free of the circuit.
  6. Attach the bottom end of the coil of wire around the pencil to the light bulb socket.
  7. Attach the other 15 cm copper wire from the battery to the other terminal of the light socket.
  8. Touch the alligator clip to the top end of the pencil making contact with the copper coil.
  9. Now slide the alligator clip down toward the bottom of the pencil and take notice of the brightness of the light bulb.
