Objective(s)

Students will:
  • identify the process by which an engineer solves a problem
  • generate a hypothesis about an acid mine drainage sample
  • justify answers using a PowerPoint presentation about the information they gathered

Time Required

1-2 class periods

Pre-Requisite Skills

Student will have to complete lessons 1-4.

21st Century Tools (Technology Tools)

  • Computer
  • Internet
  • Presentation Software

Instructional Materials

Procedure

  1. Students will take the collected information from their handout.
  2. They will use the Engineer's Problem Solving Method to answer the questions about their acid mine drainage area.
  3. Students will pay close attention to the steps for generating a hypothesis and calculating cost.
  4. Students will develop a presentation that outlines the method they choose to develop as a solution for their mine.

Differentiated Instruction

Students with special needs could give a written report about acid mine drainage, instead of giving a presentation in front of the class.  They could also give the presentation in front of a smaller group of students or teachers.

Author's Comments

Students will have difficulty generating a hypothesis.  They will need guidance in wording it correctly.
