Objective(s)Students will observe the launch
of their hot-air balloon. Upon completion of all launches,
students will evaluate and critique their design and suggest
possible improvements to the construction. Time Required
Two (or Three) 90 minute class
periods (Four or five 45 minute class periods). Time will
depend on number of groups that launch.
Pre-Requisite Skills
Student groups should have already built
a hot-air balloon for launch during this lesson.
21st Century Tools (Technology Tools)
A digital camera will be used to
take pictures of the different balloons in flight (or not). For
the balloon evaluation, students will need computers with
Microsoft Word or PowerPoint, and Computer & LCD projector for
presentations to the class. Instructional Materials
Mass for the "payload" of the
balloons (we chose a 50 g mass).
Procedure
-
You will need an
open area in which to launch the individual balloons.
- Use your heating
source to begin launching the balloons.
- Have students
take pictures of the balloons in flight.
- Upon completion,
return to the classroom and have students begin reflecting on the
performance of their balloon.
- Students will use
computers with Microsoft PowerPoint to make a presentation to the
class as to the success or shortcomings of their design, along
with suggestions for improvements.
Differentiated Instruction
Peer tutoring/teaching may be
used for students to investigate and discuss their performance
in the launch. Collaboration
The culmination of this unit could lead
into a Social Studies discussion of the history of flight and the
development of technology. An English teacher would be useful in
assessing the final project of student work.
Author's CommentsIf
students/time does not allow for a PowerPoint presentation before the
class, have student groups write a one-page summary about the
performance of their design.
