Objective(s)
Students will construct scale models
of the athletic facilities built in Lesson 2.
Time Required
Two 50 minute class periods
Pre-Requisite Skills
Computing areas, perimeters of basic
figures.
21st Century Tools (Technology Tools)
PowerPoint, Internet, Geometers SketchPad,
calculators
Instructional Materials
Worksheet:
Build It and They Will Come...
Worksheet KEY:
Build It and They Will Come... KEY
Construction paper, scissors, toothpicks (for fences)
Procedure
- Students will work in groups on all
tasks. Each group will construct scale models of
their athletic facilities.
- Pass out Build It and They Will Come...
- Groups may need to review how to convert units:
One of These Things is Not Like the Other
- Students will show their computations on the worksheet
for constructing their facilities.
- Remind students that certain facilities will need fences.
- Groups will use construction paper and toothpicks to construct
facilities and fences.
- After approval of teacher, groups will level the appropriate
area on the relief model and attach scale facilities to classroom
relief.
- If time permits, groups may want to begin their PowerPoint slide showing
their facility with dimensions. Geometers SketchPad may be
useful.
Differentiated Instruction
Students will be working in
collaborative groups with other students of all ability levels. The
Internet site,
http://www.digitaldutch.com/unitconverter/ may be helpful for
students needing help converting between units.
CollaborationThis
lesson is part of the Ultimate Athletic unit that will be shared between
the science and mathematics classes. The mathematics involved could be
approached by students in all levels from Pre-Algebra through Geometry.
This unit would be appropriate for either 9th or 10th grade CATS
classes. Collaboration between a mathematics class and science class
would make the unit less time-consuming for both.
Author's CommentsSome
groups may need help with the scaling down of the dimensions needed for
each facility. The mathematics class will need access to the topo model
constructed in Lesson 1 of the unit.
21st Century Assessment/Evaluation
Completed worksheets from each group will
be collected and checked. The completion of an accurate scale model for
each facility is expected of each group.
