engineers, will determine the effect of constructing the new
Ultimate High School and athletic facilities on the local watershed.
Time Required
One 50 minute class period
Pre-Requisite Skills

calculate areas, ability to calculate percentages
21st Century Tools (Technology Tools)
Calculators
Instructional Materials
Sink or ... Swim??? Instruction Sheet
Pervious/Impervious Surfaces and Stream Health Worksheet
Site Boundaries Map
ProcedureIn this
lesson students will determine the percentage of “UHS Watershed”
that is impervious and using that information will determine the health
of streams associated with that watershed. Go to the
Sink or ... Swim??? Instruction Sheet for details.
Differentiated Instruction
Students will be working in collaborative
groups with other students of all ability levels.
Collaboration

lesson incorporates map reading skills, calculating area, and
calculating percentages. Students must interact effectively both in
their small groups, and groups must interact effectively on the larger
class scale.
21st Century Assessment/Evaluation
Collect and grade the
Pervious/Impervious Surfaces and Stream Health Worksheet. Have
students recognized the importance of evaluating human effects on the
environment? They should include what they have learned about
environmental engineering on their PowerPoint in Lesson 5.
