Objective(s)

Student will:

  • identify the different kinds of wave terminology including:  Sound, Light, and Water waves
  • draw transverse, longitudinal, and surface waves and label each appropriately
  • compare and contrast longitudinal, transverse, and surface waves

Time Required

Two 45 minute periods

Pre-Requisite Skills

Knowledge of how to search Internet.

21st Century Tools (Technology Tools)

Data Projector, Computer and Internet

Instructional Materials

Wave PowerPoint, Wave Voc. Worksheet

Procedure

While showing the Wave PowerPoint presentation, the teacher should add any information relevant to help the students get involved.  This could be done to find out what prior knowledge the student already has.  The student will then use the website The Physics Classroom to find the definitions for wave terminology and draw the appropriate waves using the Wave Voc. Worksheet

Differentiated Instruction

Some students may need additional time to find the definitions within the website.  Consult your students' IEPs for further modifications.

Collaboration

This activity can be implemented in an Advanced Physics class with help in an Algebra class.

21st Century Assessment/Evaluation

The student will turn in the Wave Voc. Worksheet for a grade, or the teacher can grade the student using a rubric and therefore include how well the students are working on the Internet and how well they are working together within their group.  The worksheet could be reviewed orally in class.
