Objective(s)
Students will:
- be able to identify
the characteristics of sound waves
- know the differences among
speeds of sounds
- be able to graphically illustrate various
concepts dealing with sound waves (Doppler effect, reflection,
interference, longitudinal vs. transversal waves)
- use the
velocity formula to find velocity, wavelength, or frequency of a
wave given two of the three variables.
Time Required
Two 45 minute class periods
Pre-Requisite Skills
Students should have
finished lesson one and two about wave basics.
21st Century Tools (Technology Tools)
The teacher should be able to project the
Lesson 3 Presentation so the entire class can see it. The
presentation computer should have Internet access.
Instructional Materials
Handout needed for every student is
Lesson 3 - Sound Waves. The presentation for the teacher to show is Lesson 3 Presentation.
Procedure
Show
Lesson 3 Presentation to the students while adding your own
knowledge and science skills to the discussion. Take the time to
experiment with different values in the online simulations. After the
presentation, distribute Lesson 3 - Sound Waves and have each student demonstrate their
knowledge of the material by answering the questions and drawing their
own pictures to illustrate the concepts.
Differentiated Instruction
Consult your students' IEPs for
modifications.
Collaboration
More math
problems involving the velocity = wavelength * frequency and distance =
velocity * time problems could be created for further math practice.

21st Century Assessment/Evaluation
Check the worksheet to see if the students
can graphically describe the concepts instead of just reciting them.
