Objective(s)

The students, in groups of three, will put together a PowerPoint Presentation that includes mathematical reasoning to support their design and present it to the rest of the class as a teaching tool.

Time Required

Four 45 minute class periods

Pre-Requisite Skills

Completed Lessons 1-4.  Internet Research, Algebra, Geometry.

21st Century Tools (Technology Tools)

Data Projector, Computer with Internet

Instructional Materials

Final Project PPT, PowerPoint Tutorial , Sample Rubric

Procedure

Students will be put into groups of three.  The teacher should show the Final Project PPT and discuss with the students the varying aspects of engineering (i.e., good pay, meeting needs of the community, problem solving, etc.) and any other information they may want to add to the PowerPoint.  The time to do the project could vary depending on the intellectual level of the students.

Differentiated Instruction

Some students may need more help from peer tutors.  Consult your students' IEPs for further modifications.

Collaboration

Science and math teachers can work together to help students understand the formulas used.

21st Century Assessment/Evaluation

Each group will present a five minute PowerPoint presentation to the rest of the class defending their design on the chosen project.  A Sample Rubric is provided that can be edited to accommodate your own classroom's goals for the project.  Let your students have input into the creation of the assessment rubric to give them more ownership of the project.
