Overview:

The purpose of the learning experience is to develop a scale model of the Ultimate Classroom using the Classroom Architect at http://classroom.4teachers.org and the information researched in the previous lesson.  Students will include all requirements in their model and work in teams to complete the assignment.

Objective(s):

The purpose of this learning experience is to synthesize the researched information and apply it into a working model using technology

Time Required:

Two 45 minute class periods

Pre-Requisite Skills:

Students will need to have basic technology and Internet skills, as well as writing skills

21st Century Tools:

Students will use the Internet as well as the online website to complete the assignment

Instructional Materials:

The Classroom Architect - http://classroom.4teachers.org
The packet of researched information completed in the previous lesson.

Procedure:
  1. Students will work in groups and use the information gathered from Lesson 1 to make a model of their Ultimate Classroom, fulfilling all requirements in the most cost effective manner. 
  2. Students will use Classroom Architect to construct this model in groups.
  3. When complete, students will trade models with other groups for a critique session.
  4. Students will develop a list of at least three positive aspects of the design, as well as three aspects that need improvement to share with the group with whom they traded. This will aid each team in improving their classroom design.
  5. Teacher will monitor each group
Differentiated Instruction:

The teacher can work more closely with remedial groups and reduce the number of requirements. The teacher can extend this unit in a number of ways for enriched groups, such as giving more detailed requirements.  Students can also make several 3D models of their room to show different solution possibilities.

Please feel free to change this unit is any way that will suit your classroom.  All lessons will take a number of days to complete.  Enjoy this Problem Based Learning Activity.

21st Century Assessment:
  • Completion of final project packet and classroom model according to rubric
  • Teacher will use pre and post assessment tool completed online in a computer lab
  • Turn in floor plan print out from website
