WV State Standards:

Math: M.O.6.3.6, M.O.6.4.5

National Standards:

Math: 4, 5

Blooms Taxonomy:

21st Century Skills:
Problem Solving, Critical Thinking, Communication, Self-direction

Overview:

During this lesson, students will need to develop their storage unit design and determine if it meets the space requirements in the classroom. They will use measurement skills to accurately design their storage units and convert their actual measurements into a scale drawing.

Objective:

Students will use geometric representations to design their backpack storage unit.  They will also construct a scale drawing from their representation’s actual dimensions.

Time Required:

Two-Three (35 minute class periods)

Pre-Requisite Skills:

Students will need to be familiar with scale, scale drawings, ratio, and proportion.  Click on the  Pre-requisite lesson on Scale Drawing

21st Century Tools:

Computers with Internet
Wiki

Instructional Materials:

rulers
tape measures
yard sticks
meter sticks
tape
poster board
cardboard
graph paper
Wiki rubric

Procedure:

  1. Teacher will discuss scale and scale drawing.
  2. In teams, students will determine the actual size of their storage unit and select appropriate units of measurement for their design.  Students will have to measure the actual section of the room where the storage unit will be built. They need to determine the measurements of their design and if it will fit in the space designated for the storage unit.
  3. They will complete the design of their unit. Students will make the final design of their backpack storage unit with actual measurements. They will go to the location in the classroom and measure everything they can imagine they will need to construct the backpack storage unit.
  4. Each group will create a scale drawing of their design. Each scale drawing must include the scale factor.  Click on Making a Scale Drawing.
Differentiated Instruction:

Students will use cooperative learning to meet their individual needs throughout the project. They will assign responsibilities based on individual strengths and styles of learning.

21st Century Assessment:

Student assessment of the design and scale drawing will be evaluated in their completed Wiki project.  The Wiki rubric will address this part of the project.
