Problem: (watch video of Problem)

Mrs. Backback has had it with her messy classroom.  Everyday when she walks into her classroom, after the students have arrived, she is appalled by the disorderly mess.  Backpacks, piled high into the corner, are creating an unsightly eyesore.  Mrs. Backback has decided to engage the students in a competition, asking them to act as engineers to design a cost efficient corner storage unit for the backpacks.

Mrs. Backback requires that the storage unit fit into the corner of the room and be contained within a four foot square area, with the ceiling approximately 10 feet from the floor.  Your engineering design for the corner storage unit must accommodate the needs of every student and fit in the classroom space provided by Mrs. Backback.

Unit Overview:

In this unit, the students will be introduced to engineering and learn measurement and geometry skills such as linear measurement, application of formulas to determine perimeter, circumference, area and volume of 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional figures.  In addition, the students will learn to use scale factor and construct a scale drawing of their classroom storage unit.
