Lesson 3: The AIDS Quilt

AIDS Quilt and what it is.

using sites on the Internet.

Students will design and create an AIDS Quilt
panel.

ASSIGNMENT 1: One 50 minute period

Teacher notes:

Review County/School policy on AIDS education.
-
Reserve the school computer lab for two days.
Be sure Internet access is available.

Assure that all students have signed and understood
the Acceptable Use Policy.
-
Secure Library use as a backup.
-
Request that Librarian display materials on
AIDS.
-
Collect several magazines, newspapers, and other
sources to be cut up for collage.

Have each student design and create a personal
AIDS Quilt panel. Students may use various types of art work including
drawings and attaching pictures. When completed attach all panels
and create a class quilt.

Each student will write a paragraph explaining
the meaning of the items on the panel.
Modifications:
-
Since Internet access to certain Internet web
sites may not be available at one time or another, it is advisable to have
library access available.
-
IEP modifications should be considered
in all assignments.
Enrichment Activities:
-
Have students go to The
Aids Channel and click on the Aids Memorial. They may investigate
different types of memorials and people the memorials are dedicated to.
Evaluation assessments:
-
Assignment one scavenger hunt answers are to
be graded on a 100 pt. scale.

Assignment two panels are to be graded on the
following rubric.

Enrichment Activities:

Students may create panel in Microsoft Paint
or other design program

Contact the local AIDS assistance organization
and make a panel for someone has had died from AIDS.
