Lesson 1:  Seashells on the Seashore

Grade Level:

Kindergarten
Learner Outcomes: Duration of Lesson:

90 minutes total - Divide the class into 3 groups (30 minutes per group).

Materials:

Watercolor Paints
Drawing Paper
Brushes and water in cups
Pattern of Fish
Scissors
Aluminum Foil
Glue
Rainbow Fish or other selected ocean literature
Assortment of seashells
Jar of shells for estimating

Technology Tools:

Internet Accessible Computer

Teacher Notes:

Have internet access permission slips on file.
Have a selection of books available about oceans and related topics.

Procedures:

  1. Read the story Rainbow Fish or other selected ocean literature.
  2. Discuss the story with the students.
  3. Teach students the finger play "Fish Are Swimming."
  4. Students will paint the drawing paper, covering the whole page.  Allow this to dry completely.
  5. After paper is dry, the students cut out a fish pattern from it.  They then are given a small piece of foil to glue onto the fish.
  6. Students are given a large box of assorted seashells.  Let them look at the shells and see what they look like.
  7. Ask them to sort the shells using attributes.  After sorting, ask them to explain what the attributes are for their sets.
  8. Fill a jar with shells and then ask students to estimate how many shells are in the jar.
  9. Chart student responses to the estimation jar.  See who is the closest.  Discuss ways to make an accurate estimate.
  10. Students can count the shells as they put them back into the box.

Modifications as specified by child's IEP.
Peer tutoring for special needs students.

Does the student discuss the story accurately after having it read to them?

Listen to students count while returning the shells to the box for one on one correspondence.
