Lesson 2:  Coral at the Shore

Grade Level:

     Kindergarten

Duration of Lesson:

60 minutes total - Divide class into 2 groups (30 minutes per group)

Materials:

Suggested Literature: Rainbow Fish (or other book about the ocean)
Broken pieces of brick or soft coal (charcoal)
Non iodized Salt
Liquid Bluing
Water
Household Ammonia
Small Dish
Blue Jello
Gummy Fish
Clear Plastic Cups
Plastic Bowl and Spoon
Measuring Cup

Technology Tools:

Video Camera
VCR
Internet Accessible Computer

Teacher Notes:

Have internet access permission slips on file.
Try the coral recipe yourself to make sure it works for you.
Have all cooking utensils ready to go.

Procedures:

  1. Read Rainbow Fish or other chosen literature to the class.
  2. Discuss the story with the students.  Have them re-tell including the beginning, middle, and end of the story.
  3. Following directions, students will make coral.
  4. Students will make a snack called ocean in a cup.
  5. While waiting for the snack, students will review the finger play Fish Are Swimming.
  6. They will learn the song "Take Me Out To The Ocean."
  7. After practicing the finger play and songs, the students will be videotaped to show their parents on the final day of our unit.
  8. Students will eat their snack.
  9. Students will observe the coral over a period of time to note changes in it.
Modifications:

Modifications as specified by child's IEP.
Peer tutoring for special needs students.

Enrichment Activities:

Sink and float activities at a water table.
Play "The Magic Schoolbus," or "Under The Sea" game on CD-ROM.

Evaluation/Assessment:

Students reasoning while discussing the  story has increased since 1st day of the unit.
Do students follow directions to create coral and ocean in a cup?
Students are able to learn, recite, and perform a song and finger play.
