  Lesson 4:  Swimmy in the Sea



Grade Level:

     Kindergarten

Learner Outcomes:

Duration of Lesson:

60 minutes total - Divide class into 2 groups (30 minutes each)

Materials:

Butcher Paper
Glue
Red Fish for each student, one black fish cut out of construction paper
Swimmy  or other selected ocean literature
 

Technology Tools:

Internet Accessible Computer

Teacher Notes:

Have fish cut outs for the lesson. ( a red fish per student and one extra black fish)
Have internet access permission slips on file.

Procedures:
 

  1. Read Swimmy or other selected ocean literature, to the class.
  2. Discuss the story.  Ask questions about friendship.  Ask students to explain what happened to Swimmy.
  3. Access the web site Treasures @ Sea.
  4. Complete the following activities with the students:
  5. Under the Sea Hide and Seek
  6. Swimmy Puzzle
  7. Ocean Words to Remember
  8. Games and Puzzles - Maze - Help the Hermit Crab Find a New Home
  9. Sing "I Went Swimming in the  Ocean."
  10. Students select a paper fish from a bag(all red).  Match the number of fish to the number of students in your class.
  11. They will glue their fish to the class fish outline drawn on a large piece of butcher paper to recreate the end of the story, Swimmy.
  12. This will become a bulletin board for the class.
  13. Students finalize by discussing the value of friendship and working together.
  14. Students complete Quizzes - Fishing for Facts and A Whale of a Quiz, orally.


Modifications:

Modifications as specified by child's IEP.
Peer tutoring for special needs students.

Ocean Art - Puppet Story
Make an ABC Ocean Book

Evaluation/Assessment:

Can students complete the quizzes accurately?
Can students use new ocean vocabulary in proper context?
Can students work cooperatively to make a bulletin board?
Can students retell the story of Swimmy including the beginning, middle, and the end?
