Lesson 5:  A Day At The Beach

Grade Level:

     Kindergarten

Duration of Lesson:

One half day of school (approx. 3 hrs.)

Materials:

Blue Napkins
Medicine Cups
Pretzels
Goldfish Crackers
Peanut Butter
Sponge Ball
Selection of books about the ocean
Assortment of Plastic sea creatures
Paper
Pencil
Beach ball

Technology Tools:

Internet Accessible Computer
VCR
Camcorder

Teacher Notes:

Have internet access permission slips on file.
Ask for parent volunteers

Procedures:

  1. Students will get into groups of 4 or 5 and circulate through the activities.  Some of these are being staffed with parent volunteers.
  2. Students will make a beach snack called "Fishing for a Snack."
  3. Students will make "Beach Food."
  4. Students will play a game called Octopus.
  5. Students will play Crab Races.
  6. Using plastic ocean creatures students will create number sentences and solve them using the creatures as counters.  They will then record the number sentences on paper.
Modifications:

Modifications as specified by child's IEP.
Peer tutoring for special needs students.

Saltwater Paintings
Microsoft Oceans CD-ROM

Evaluation/Assessment:

Can students listen and follow directions while making snacks?
Students cooperate to play games.
Students follow directions while playing beach games.
Can students create and solve number sentences?
Can students accurately record number sentences?
