TITLE: Community Connections
GRADE LEVELS: 3-5

LEARNER OUTCOMES:

Students will research one area of Appalachian culture
focusing on crafts, hobbies, community businesses, etc. that reflect our
local heritage. They will use libraries, encyclopedias, community,
and internet sources. Information and contacts will be documented
on graphic organizers and 'Electronic Field Trip' sheet.

Students will complete internet activity "You Be the Historian"
and complete worksheet activity at the end of site.

Students will contribute to collaborative classroom Power
Point presentation from research completed. This will be shared with
the rest of school in preparation for school wide Appalachian Heritage
Day.

Students will contact a local community member for a video
interview or arrange a classroom visit during Appalachian Heritage Day.
TIME FRAME:
Approximately 8-10 class periods (30-45 minutes)
MATERIALS:
encyclopedias, magazines/periodicals ("Goldenseal"/"West
Virginia", data sheet,
video recorder and tapes
TECHNOLOGY TOOLS/COURSEWARE:
Internet ready computers, CD-ROM encyclopedias (Infopedia,
Compton's Reference Collection, World Book, Encarta), teacher created bookmarked
sites for student research.

Class copies made for "You Be the Historian" activity
sheets, web template sheet, "Electronic Field Trip Ticket" sheet.

Teach/review process of creating 'Power Point' slides.

Send for copy of "The West Virginians".

Sign out video recorder and obtain cassettes for interviews.

Set up and coordinate with school a date for an Appalachian
Heritage Day.
PROCEDURES:
-
The teacher will introduce lesson and go over displayed
objectives.

Students will view video "The
West Virginians" to build background, to use as a springboard
for class discussion, and to contribute research ideas for students.

The students will be given option of working alone or
in pairs for research and projects.

Students will complete internet activity "You
Be the Historian". This activity is an excellent resource for
class discussion about primary and secondary sources and the historical
process. Students must complete two page activity sheet located at
the end of site. The teacher should run off copies for students ahead
of time.

The students will select one traditional craft/activity/hobby
and complete a graphic
organizer on topic.

The students will complete 'Electronic
Field Trip Ticket' to document research on internet sites listed below
in references. These sites should be bookmarked or displayed on poster
or dry erase board for easier student viewing.

Each individual/pair of students will prepare two 'Power
Point' presentation slides for a classroom presentation program highlighting
areas of research.

The students will conduct a video
interview or arrange a classroom visit of a local craftsman, artisan,
storyteller, historical society member, senior citizen, grandparent, etc.,
in which they will describe and/or demonstrate their particular craft,
skill, or talent.
