TITLE: Now and Then
GRADE LEVELS: 3-5

LEARNER OUTCOMES:
Students will-

Compare and contrast characteristics of present-day life
with characteristics of life in great grandparents times (early 1900's).

Work in cooperative groups.
-
In cooperative group choose one topic to research using
library resources, community resources, online/CD-ROM encyclopedias, and
teacher specified internet sites.
-
Complete activity sheet using researched information.
-
Edit and organize the information they have found into
one of the following:
-printed report
-student
created book
-PowerPoint
presentation
-video
presentation
TIME FRAME:
Approximately 5 class periods (30-45 minutes)
MATERIALS:
encyclopedias, magazines/West Virginia periodicals
("Goldenseal"/West Virginia" magazine)
TECHNOLOGY TOOLS/COURSEWARE:
Internet ready computers, word processing application,
CD-ROM encyclopedias (Infopedia, Compton's Reference Collection, World
Book, Encarta), bookmarked sites for student research, (optional
- Microsoft Power Point)
TEACHER NOTES:

Classroom copies of 'activity sheet'
PROCEDURES:
-
The teacher will introduce lesson and go over displayed
objectives.

The teacher will facilitate a brainstorming session to
list what the whole class knows about following topics in present times,
and in their great grandparents times. List each topic on a separate
sheet of paper.

Have students break into five or six small groups with
three to four students per group. Each group selects one topic to
research. Groups will access the bookmarked/posted Web sites (listed
in reference section). This will be evidenced in the completion of
an Electronic Field Trip Ticket worksheet.

Students will answer questions on activity
sheet.

As a culminating activity, each group will present researched
information to the class in one of the following forms: printed report,
student created book, PowerPoint
or video presentation.
