Music Through The Years

Students will identify
musical instruments used in playing folk music.

Students will compare
the lyrics of folk songs to those of today (country music).

Students will compare
the musical instruments used to play traditional folk music to country
music.

of various folk artists and styles.

Students will listen to
various folk and country songs.
TIME FRAME:
2 to 3
sessions approximately 45 minutes in length
MATERIALS:
Poster
Board (optional)
TECHNOLOGY TOOLS/COURSEWARE:
CD's
and/or Cassettes (appropriate country songs), CD/Cassette Player, Computer/Laptop,
Web TV,
Projection Device, Internet
TEACHER NOTES:
If Web TV or Projection devices not available the lyrics to songs should
be put on poster board
Teacher should choose folk and country songs dealing with themes such as
love, work, fun
Students can be paired to work on the internet
PROCEDURES:

Introduce folk song "Cotton
Eye Joe".

Play song again
-
Discuss the difference
between the verse and chorus. Explain the form which is A-B Binary
-
Play again and have students
find the beat and keep it by stomp-clapping the beat
-
Divide the class into
2 groups, one group will sing the verse, the other will sing the chorus
-
Switch so both groups
will do both parts
-
Introduce classroom instruments.
Have students choose those that are appropriate to play the song.
Example - drum or tambourine not bells or maroccas

Play song again and turn
off voices and identify instruments in the song

Have students use the
internet to listen to various sound clips of folk music and identify
the instruments (see references)

Play instrument game
-
Play modern song
"From Here To Eternity" by Michael Peterson

Go over lyrics and repeat
steps from beginning of lesson using the above mentioned song

Continue lesson using
"work" theme

Folk Song - "I've Been
Working on the Railroad"

Country Song - "40 Hour
Week" by Alabama (Alabama Greatest Hits)
MODIFICATIONS:
Teacher can choose any folk or country song to be used in
the lesson depending on the grade level
ENRICHMENT:
-
Have students choose a
folk song and write another verse to the song
-
Students can create an
instrument using items found around home
-
Bring in a guest musician
to play for the class that can play the traditional musical instrument
(fiddle, mandolin, harmonica, guitar, banjo, dulcimer)
