GRADE LEVEL: Grades 7 and 8
SUBJECTS: Mathematics; Social Studies; Technology; Language Arts
LEARNER OUTCOMES:
Four 45 minute periods.
MATERIALS:
FIRST PERIOD:
1. Student will make a list of tuition costs in the graphing calculator.
2. Using the calculator, the student will find the mean and the
median of tuition costs and make a box-and-whisker
plot to
compare data.
3. Student will make a list of room and board costs in the
graphing calculator.
4. Using the calculator, the students will find the mean and the
median of room and board costs and make a box-and
whisker
plot
to compare data.
5. Students will write a summary about the information in the
calculator and their college.
SECOND PERIOD:
1. Student will make a list of student population in the graphing
calculator.
2. Using the calculator, student will create a bar
graph to compare
the size of the schools.
3. Student will make a list of professor and student ratios in the
graphing calculator.
4. Using the calculator, student will create a scatter
plot to compare
the ratios.
5. Students will write a summary about the information in the
calculator and their college.
THIRD PERIOD:
1. Students will choose from tuition costs, room and board costs,
student population or professor/student ratio and make a graph
using Excel.
FOURTH PERIOD:
1. Using data from Lesson 2, students will create a timeline
featuring dates of establishment and name changes of colleges in
WV.
MODIFICATIONS:
1. Make modifications according to students Individual Education
Plan.
2. Use peer assistance to help students who are having difficulty.
ENRICHMENT ACTIVITIES:
1. Students will experiment with different graphs on the graphing
calculator.
2. Students will enter the data in Excel and create a variety of
graphs.
