Be sure to explain to students
that although we associate hot temperatures with sunburn, this is not always
the case.

May want to extend this into a
Science lesson about UV rays.
Procedures:

Teacher will discuss the extreme
temperature changes we face throughout the year. Identify seasons
and the typical weather patterns that we see.

Focus on the amount of time that
we spend outdoors (in the cold and hot temperatures) having fun.
-
Teacher will show "Wintertime"
Power Point. During this, the teacher needs to emphasize that frostbite
is usually associated with emergency situations. Situations like
this have left one confined to the outdoors or areas of limited shelter
and warmth.

Students will visit Understanding
Frostbite web site.

Students will view "Sun
Smart" Power Point.

Students will determine their
susceptibility to the sun's rays by visiting the Skin
Types web site.

Teacher can modify lesson as needed
for special needs students.
Enrichment Activities:

Students may complete weather
word search puzzle.

Students will create a new item
that could be marketed to the public that would be beneficial to people
in times of cold or hot temperatures.

Students may complete sun
puzzle.
Evaluation/Assessment:

Students will draw a picture
showing themselves being careful to protect their body in both weather
extremes. Students will complete Wintertime
Quiz.
