Choosing a Career That's Right for Me!


 

Lesson 2:  Survey - Know Yourself






Grade Level:  8, 9, 10, 11, 12

Subject:  Vocational/Technical Skills, Language Arts, Social Studies

Learner Outcome: Students will be able to identify multiple career options.

Duration of Lesson: One 50 minute class period.

Materials:  Printout of careers that match interests (which will be generated at the end of the lesson), and assessment rubric.

Technology Tools/Courseware: Presentation device (LCD panel, TView [scan converter], or multimedia projector), computers with internet access.

Teacher Notes:

ø The teacher must be computer literate and comfortable with the internet.
ø The teacher must obtain a site license for the Bridges internet site. This can be accomplished through the county technology coordinator. (Check with your school’s technology contact first. Your school may already have a site license.) *There is a free trial for students and teachers that lasts one month.
ø Students must have a signed acceptable use policy. If the student does not possess a signed acceptable use policy, he/she can be paired with another student.
ø The teacher should be familiar with the Bridges internet site.
ø If the teacher wishes to use an alternate site, this can be accomplished through the Occupational Outlook Handbook site.
ø The teacher may want to do an introduction to internet, depending on the skill level of students. A helpful site is www.learntheinternet.com

Lesson:

1. Bring up the internet site http://cx.bridges.com on the presentation device, as well as having students go the site.

2. Have students select “WV” and “Student.”
3. Next the students will select “Planning” and then “Career Research Tool.”

4. Finally, the students will select “Survey” and then answer the questions in the values, skills, interest and style sections.

 STEP 1  - Use to generate over 30 potential career and/or recreation ideas through a list of randomly presented leads from our service.
 STEP 2  - Research various careers to determine your personal favorites.
 STEP 3  - Prioritize your Top Five careers from your research list.
 BEGIN  - Begin your career research by completing the values, skills, interests and style inventories.
