              IT'S IN THE BLOOD 
  


GRADE LEVEL:  9-12 

SUBJECT(S):  Science, Health 

LEARNER OUTCOMES: 

Students will use the computer to research a blood disorder. 
Students will design and create a brochure about a blood disorder. 

DURATION OF LESSONS:  Four 90 minute class periods 

MATERIALS: 

Microsoft Word 
Microsoft Publisher 
Clip Art 

TECHNOLOGY TOOLS/COURSEWARE: 

Computer with Internet access 
Data projector 
TV 

TEACHER NOTES: 

Reserve computer lab. 
Teacher notes for lecture are needed. 
Students will need to use various programs. 
Students must be reminded how to save material on the computer. 
Teacher must explain usage of data projector. 

PROCEDURES: 
Day 1:  Students will use their textbooks and classroom generated notes to develop an understanding of blood disorders.  Students will use the computer lab to initiate their research on blood disorders. 
Useful website addresses include:   
                                Pictures from Clip Art 
                                Information from Various Internet Sites 
Day 2:  Prerequisite skill:  Students will need to be aware of how to use various word programs to develop a brochure and to save their work.  The teacher will need to demonstrate the skills necessary to accomplish this. 
Day 3:  Students will use a portion of the class to experiment with a variety of graphics that they wish to use to add interest to their brochures.  They will use the remaining time to compose their brochure on their disease of interest. 
Day 4:  Students will present their work to the class when completed using the data projector. 
 
MODIFICATIONS:   

Refer to Individual Education Plans of special needs students in the class or consult with Special Education Department to determine special directions where applicable. 

EVALUATION/ASSESSMENT: 

Students will be assessed through observation during their research phase of the assignment.   
Brochures will be evaluated by the class members using the Classroom Assessment List.
