Title: The Perfect Friend! 

Grade Levels:  3 - 5

Subjects:  Language Arts, Science, Social Studies

Learner Outcomes:

Duration of Lesson:  50 minutes daily for one week

Materials:  Charlotte's Web book, dictionary, spider web outline, spider pattern

Technology Tools/Courseware: Multimedia computer, digital camera, scanner

Teacher Notes:  Each student needs an Acceptable Use Policy on file.  Use teacher created spider and spider web patterns.

Procedures:

        How did Charlotte prove that she was a true friend to Wilbur?
        How was Wilbur a true friend to her?
        How were the animal characters like real people?
        Explain how loyalty and trust strengthened Charlotte's and Wilbur's relationship?
        Was Wilbur really as terrific, radiant, and humble as Charlotte pointed out?           Lines 1 & 5  -  name of character or friend
          Line 2  -  list of things this person likes to do
          Lines 3 & 4 - adjectives to describe friend Modifications:  Follow special students' IEPs.  Lower level students may work with another student.

Enrichment:
     Design a "Friendship Award" for a great friend.
     Design posters listing traits of a good friend or that advertises "the perfect friend".  May work with a classmate or in cooperative groups.
     Make a "friendship chart"  (similar to a family tree). For example, list friends and their characteristics and/or what they like.

Evaluation/Assessment: Participation in discussions, pairs or groups.  Completion of projects, charts, and graphs.
