KNOW YOUR RIGHTS

Grade Level: 5th and 6th grade

Subject: Social Studies

Learner Outcomes: The students will:

identify the Bill of Rights as an important part of the Constitution
recognize that the first ten amendments are known as the Bill of Rights
discover the history and the founding fathers of the Bill of Rights

Duration of Lesson: 2 class periods (48 minute periods)

Materials: Computer with internet access and poster paper

Technology Tools/Courseware: Internet access and scanner

Teacher Notes: Make sure all students have signed the internet acceptable use policy.

Procedures:

Students are to access the following website, WebQuest
Students are to discover the history of the Bill of Rights by clicking on the designated links at this site listed after clicking on the Resources icon.
After a teacher led discussion about the history and the importance of this document, students are then directed to read the task assigned for them explaining that the Bill of Rights is going to be eliminated. Students are then asked to follow the directions given in order to help their Congressman defend and argue to maintain their rights. These five step directions are spelled out step by step on this site.
Once these steps have been completed, students must present their argument to the class and explain the information on the visual aid (poster).

Modifications: Cooperative pairing for students with special needs

Enrichment: Students are to present their position with use of their visual aid to other classrooms
