Grade Levels:  5th Grade and 6th Grade

Subjects:  Social Studies, Mathematics, and Language Arts

Learner Outcomes:  The students will:

• identify the thirteen original colonies on a map
• research to find out the year that each of the thirteen colonies ratified the Constitution
• create a bar graph

Materials:  Computer with Internet access, colored pencils, and graph paper

Technology Tools/Courseware:  Internet access

Teacher Notes:  Make sure all students have signed the internet acceptable use policy.

Procedures:

• Students are to access Colonial Times website.
• Using the given map as a guide, students are to answer the ten questions about the thirteen colonies.
• Students are to access The Historical Background website in order to find out the year in which each of the thirteen states ratified the Constitution.
• Students are to be reviewed on creating a bar graph.
• Students are to create a bar graph in order to show these years.  Make sure students use graph paper and colored pencils.
• Students are to display these graphs in the room.

Enrichment:  Students are to create a travel brochure as directed on the Come to America website.  Once students have accessed this site, instruct them to click on "Come to America" for complete instructions.
