Title: Introduction to Graphs
Grade Levels: 4, 5, and 6
Subjects: Math, and Social Studies
Learner Outcomes:
1. Students will be able to recognize and define different
types of graphs.
2. Students will know the type of graph that will best depict data.
Duration of Lesson: One forty-five minute session
Materials: Copy of puzzle, copy of quiz, and writing tool
Technology Tools:
Overhead projector to be used for transparencies, projector device for
PowerPoint, and PowerPoint presentation.
Teacher Notes: The solution to the puzzle is available.
Procedures:
1. The PowerPoint slide show presentation
will be used as an introduction to the
lesson.
2. The vocabulary will be introduced
to the students with time for discussion.
3. The students will complete the word search
puzzle to discover the hidden
message. This puzzle is a review of the vocabulary words.
4. The teacher will explain that protecting animals by putting them
on the
endangered species list may result in the numbers of them increasing.
An
example of this is the Gray Wolf.
5. The students will be assigned to groups and will physically construct
human
graphs using data they have collected from the internet. The data
will be
on the Gray Wolf because its population has increased since being
placed
on the list. The students will go to the Graywolf's
information page and click
"distribution". As they scroll down the page they will come to a
table
containing the data of how many Gray Wolfs are known to be in the United
States. This is the data that the students will use to physically
construct
human graphs. The groups may choose which type of graph to use to
depict their data.
6. The students will take a quiz
to check for understanding of vocabulary and for
recognition of the different types of graphs.
Modifications: The quiz will be read to those who require this type of modification.
Enrichment Activities:
The exceptional students will be asked to know the correct
spelling of the vocabulary
words and to fill in the blanks on the quiz without the benefit of the
word list.
Evaluation/Assessment: The students' puzzle and quiz will be evaluated for accuracy.
