Title: Pictographs

Grade Levels: 4 and 5

Subjects: Math and Science

Learner Outcomes:

               1. The student will be able to use the Internet as a research tool and to use the
information obtained to make a pictograph.
               2. They will also be able to interpret the information on the pictograph.

Duration of Lesson: 40-50 minutes

Materials:  Drawing paper, coloring tools, pencil, transparency of pictograph

Technology Tools/Courseware: Internet, PowerPoint Presentation, Projector for PowerPoint

Teacher Notes: Have each student sign an Acceptable Use Policy
                         for the Internet.

Procedures:  1. The Power Point Presentation may be used as an introduction to this lesson.
                    2. Review some common uses of graphs.
                    3. Show the transparency of any pictograph and
                        identify the following:

                          6. Allow each student to choose an appropriate scale and symbol to represent the life spans
                         of the above listed animals.
                     7. Each student should then construct a colorful pictograph depicting the information
                         obtained, using the worksheet provided

Modifications: Students requiring additional help should be allowed to work with a helper.

Enrichment Activities: Students may choose an animal from the list above and write a short essay on the factors affecting the life span of that animal.

Evaluation/Assessment:  Students will be orally quizzed on the proper procedure for constructing a pictograph.  They should also be orally quizzed to check for understanding on reading and interpreting the data on a pictograph.  Each individuals’ pictograph should be graded for accuracy of information. Use this rubric to evaluate the lesson.

National Standards: Mathematics 1. Understands that some ways of representing a problem are more
                                helpful than others.
Technology 1. Knows that technology facilitates better communication by pro-
viding storage and retrieval of large amounts of data, an easy means of accessing
data, and faster communication among individuals.
Science 1. Know that changes in the environment can have different effects
on different organisms (e.g., some organisms move in, others move out; some
organisms survive and reproduce, others die.)

West Virginia Instructional Goals and Objectives:  Mathematics 4.25, 5.23; Technology 4.53; Science 4.24, 4.26, 5.32, 5.79.
