Title: Basketball The Here And After

Grade Level(s): 6,7,8

Subject(s): Social Studies, Phys. Ed., and Technology

Learner Outcomes: The student will learn about the history of basketball using the internet.

Duration of the lesson: One or two 45 minute class periods

Materials: Computer, 3 1/2 " floppy disk, and printer

Technology: Computer with internet and word processing (ex. Microsoft Word).

Teacher Notes: Pre-checklist before beginning this lesson

   1.Prerequisite: Student(s) must already be familiar with basic internet usage and ethics.
   2.Prerequisite: Student(s) must already be familiar with word processing
   3.Safety: Each computer or network needs filter such as NetNanny or Cyberpatrol
   4.Special Requirements: Acceptable User Policy for each student
   5.Parent Permission: Acceptable User Policy signed by parent for each student
   6. Prerequisite: Student(s) must be familiar with multi-tasking.
     7. Teachers need to preview all sites and answer all questions before the lesson.

Procedures:
1. Go to Microsoft Word and save a new file. Name it "Basketball2-Your last name and first name.
2. Type the title "Basketball- The Here and After" in Word Art.
3. Skip a line, center, and type your first and last name.
4.Skip two lines and align left. Set the font size to 14 or 16 and select the font style Normal or Times New Roman.
5.Number and type the following questions, leaving at least two or three blank lines between questions for the answers.(Complete sentences only.)
     Q1.Who is known world-wide as the inventor of basketball?
     Q2.What country was this inventor born in?
     Q3.Name two of the thirteen rules he devised for basketball?
     Q4.In addition to the creation of basketball, Naismith graduated as a what?
     Q5.Naismith had another vocation. What was it?
6. Minimize Word and double click on the internet and type in the first address: www.ukans.edu/heritage/graphics/people/naismith.html
7. Find and type the answers to the above questions in the Word File "Basketball-The Here and After".

Modifications:
1.The number of questions could be reduced.
2. Students could work in pairs or teams.
3. Students could choose to use paper and pencil instead of the Microsoft Word File.

Enrichment Activities: The students could go to puzzlemaker.com and create a crossword puzzle from the above internet article on basketball history for others.
Print one copy, let teacher scan, and print/copy enough copies for all students to solve.

Evaluation /Assessment: The student will be evaluated on the correct completion of the questions in their Word file entitled "Basketball2-Their Name" and classroom observation.
