Learner Outcomes: Based on data collected in Lesson 2, students will use Microsoft Word to construct a table utilizing each group's information.

Duration of Lesson: One to two 45 minute sessions

Materials: Large chart paper, markers, copies of Composite Chart for each student

Technology Tools: Computers with Microsoft Word table feature, printer

Teacher Notes:

  • Prior to class, put up large chart paper that has been divided into 6 columns and 11 rows.
  • Have Bridge Data Table, completed in Lesson 2, available to return to students.
  • Make copies of Composite Table for each student.
  • Seat students so that large chart is visible to all.
Procedures:
  • Group students as in previous lessons.
  • Instruct each group to select a data reporter.
  • Each data reporter records group statistics on large class chart.
  • Instruct other students to make a personal copy of the group data on the composite table.
  • Lead students, step-by-step, through the process of making a table, using the table feature on Microsoft Word.
  • Print hard copies.
Modifications: Preferential seating for students with visual/auditory needs, assign students to work with peer helper or volunteer mentor, modifications according to IEP

Enrichment Activities: Students can design their own tables using data from Cable-Supported Structures or Famous Bridges web sites.

Evaluation/Assessment: Completed table, as a hard copy
