LEARNER OUTCOMES: The student will :
DURATION OF LESSON: 5 (60 minute) class periods
- Be given an overall look at the novel The Secret Garden through a power point presentation pointing out the highlights of the book.
- Define key vocabulary terms and be able to use each in a context sentence.
- Be exposed to the Yorkshire dialect that is used throughout the novel by watching the movie, All Creatures Great and Small.
- Read the first two chapters of The Secret Garden. Students will be quizzed daily on the chapters they read.
- Briefly discuss the time period in which the novel was written (the early 1900's)
- Research and write a biographical sketch on the author, Frances Hodgson Burnett.
- Design a notebook in which all relevant information is entered from day to day.
- Keep a journal on selected topics
MATERIALS: Materials needed to complete this lesson are as follows:
1. In order to understand the novel, the students
must be given background information on the
time period in which it
was written. They must understand that at the time this story was
written, around 1910, India
was a protectorate of the British government.
2. Teacher should give students background information
about the author, Frances Hodgson
Burnet before they actually
begin to research the author..
3. Students should be able to enjoy the video All
Creatures Great and Small without fear of
being evaluated. The
purpose of the video is simply to expose them to the Yorkshire
dialect.
4. Teacher should bookmark websites the students
will use to do their research. Authors
5. Explain to students what information they are
expected to keep in their notebook and how it
will be evaluated.
6. Show students examples of journal entries so
they will know exactly how to keep a journal.
Don't assume they already
know how to do this.
PROCEDURES:
1. Students will be given a PowerPoint presentation
( The Secret Garden )highlighting
the novel The Secret Garden.
2. Students will watch the video All Creature
Great and Small.
3. Vocabulary for the first two chapters of the
novel will be discussed. Students will enter
words and definitions into
their notebooks. keywords
4. The class will read orally the first two chapters
of the novel. A quiz will be taken at the end of each

5. Background information will be given to the student
about the time period in which

6. The students will also research a website and

their feelings about moving into a new and
strange place.
Modifications:
1. Teachers should modify the lesson as necessary
to meet the students' IEP requirements.
2. Students who need extra help should be paired
in groups with students who are able to help
them.
3. Teachers should determine the needs for student
assistance based on Inclusion and request a
special education teacher
when needed.
4. Use tape to play “The Secret Garden” after independent
reading
Enrichment:
1. Students may work on a powerpoint presentation
to present to the class after the unit is
completed..
2. Students may read another novel by Frances Hodgson
Burnett.
