Title:    Secrets Everywhere

Grade Levels:  6th

Materials:  Materials needed to complete this lesson include:

Technology Tools: Teacher Notes:
1. Teacher may want to have students read the chapters for homework, quiz them, and then read
     them aloud in class.
2. Teacher should introduce vocabulary before students read each chapter
3. Teacher should explain that the students will need two flower pots in order to begin the
    experiment.
4. Teachers should stress the importance of keeping their notebooks and journals up to date.

Procedures:
1.  Students will be taken to the library and will be asked to compose their idea of  a perfect place using Microsoft Word.
      They should use descriptive words so that the reader can picture exactly what their ideal place would look
      like.  They should also tell who, if anyone, they would reveal their secret place to.
2. Students will draw a picture on a half sheet of posterboard illustrating in detail what their secret
    place would look like. These pictures will then be hung in the hallway for everyone to view.
3. Students will be assigned one chapter each night to read.  They may be given time in class to
    read.
4. Vocabulary will be given and discussed before each chapter is assigned on chapters 3-9.   keywords
5. Students will be given a quiz after each chapter to make sure they understand what they have
    read. Each quiz will include questions from previous chapters.   (   quiz3  ) (   quiz4  ) (  quiz5  ) ( quiz6  )

6. Students will begin to analyze the character of Mary and how a lack of nurturing has made her
    an unpleasant and rude individual.
7. Students will be given a worksheet so they can analyze what has happened in the novel thus far.  ( Worksheet1)
8. Students will plant seeds in two flowerpots.  Each day they will nurture one and ignore the
    other.
9. Students will begin to predict outcomes based on the secrets that are unfolding in the story.
    These predictions should be entered into their looseleaf notebooks.
10. Students will write a journal entry explaining whether they think it is so hard to keep a secret
      and will tell about a time when they were able to keep a secret from everyone.

Modifications:
1. Teachers should modify the lesson as necessary to meet the students' IEP requirements.
2. Cassette tapes of the novel should be made available to students who have difficulty reading.
3. Peer tutoring should be made available to students who have trouble keeping their notebook
    and journal up to date.
4. Teachers should determine the needs for student assistance based on Inclusion and request a
    special education teacher when needed.

Enrichment Activities:
1. Students will continue to work on powerpoint presentation to be presented at conclusion of
     novel.
2. Students will continue to read another novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett.

Evaluation/Assessment:
1. Student quizzes will be evaluated daily.
2. Student worksheets will be evaluated.
3. Notebooks will be evaluated.
4. Journals will be evaluated.
